Ever Wonder Why the Contraction for Will Not Isn’t “Willn’t”? We Know the Reason

Grammar nerds rejoice!

ContractionTATIANA AYAZO /SHUTTERSTOCKLike many grammar rules in the English language, using “won’t” as the contraction for “will not” doesn’t make a lot of sense. If we formed it like most other contractions, the result would be “willn’t.” Admittedly, that is a bit more difficult to say than “willn’t,” but come on, English language. What’s the deal?
ContractionTATIANA AYAZO /SHUTTERSTOCKBlame our European ancestors. Centuries ago, the Ye Olde English verb willan (which meant to wish or will) had two forms: wil- for the present tense and wold- for the past tense. But as time went on, the pronunciation of these verbs kept changing, from “wool” to “wel” to “woll” to “ool.”
ContractionTATIANA AYAZO /SHUTTERSTOCKBy the 16th century, there was finally some consensus on the preferred versions of this pesky word. Wil- became the familiar “will,” and wold- became our “would.” But the most popular form of the negative verb became “woll not,” which was contracted to “wonnot,” which modern English turned into “won’t.”
So contracting “will not” the logical way may not be so logical after all. However, there are grammar rules you definitely should follow, if for no other reason than sounding more intelligent.

Flat Earther Goes One on One With An Astronaut

Of all the conspiracy theories that have surfaced in our history, the Flat Earth Theory is certainly one of the more controversial and heavily discussed. Having had countless of individuals step up to try and disprove astronauts and scientists alike, it never fails to amuse and surprise us when it occurs. One of the more alarming approaches is when a Flat Earther argues with an astronaut on TV, and it’s hard to watch. Daily Mirror Mark Sargent of Seattle has been a conspiracy theorist who’s had quite the following with Flat Earthers. This theory has been getting a lot of traction as of late with people trying to disprove what we as humans have proved and believed for centuries. There is no real evidence to suggest the Earth is flat, with a multitude of concluding evidence that has proved that, in fact, the Earth is round. To argue against scientists is a bold action in itself, and to take it a step further to argue with astronauts who have...
